Enhancement of buildings and spaces - ALLOA - A town centre enhancement scheme involving 52 properties and spaces with a view to re-establishing the character of two major connected streets and to imbue new vibrancy to the area, Alloa Town Centre, Clackmannanshire. Key aims were to: get rid of street frontage parking by opening up disused back lands; carry out face-lift improvements to all the properties (a mix of public and private ownership); establish a shop frontage improvement scheme, unusually for such scheme, taking the whole street as one; carry out a sensitive and relevant ground surface landscaping scheme; create a new mini square. Town centre revitalization - STENHOUSEMUIR - An urban regeneration scheme to establish a new car-free central square as a vibrant retail hub for local businesses, the staging of community events, and for public relaxation in Stenhousemuir Town Centre. An excercise in Urban Place making - SOUTH SHIELDS - An exercise in urban place making design, South Shields, Northumberland. Key aims were to: remove buses and cars from the existing square; re-characterise the buildings around the square by over-cladding and by adding porticoes; balconies and other features, enhance the listed central building; reinforce pedestrian routes into the square better connecting it to the surrounding area; establish a strong environmental character by means of ground surface treatment and trees; create opportunities for better use of the space for open air outside public activities. Riverside regeneration and landscaping - KENDAL - A proposal for regeneration and the holistic connecting of riverside along some 5 miles of the river Kent, extending north/south, including Kendal town centre, Cumbria. Key aims were to: carry out environmental improvements for the full length of the riverside route and with key stops and gateways; link the funding of the proposals to key local industries ; regenerate Kirkland, one of the oldest and most neglected parts of the town centre, and which sits on the riverside by infill development. Residential development in conservation village - NATLAND - An infill residential development in Natland conservation village, South Lakeland, Cumbria. Key aims were to: utilise a linear infill site within the centre of the village (see location plan); create a sensitive design using local materials. Water based business park, regeneration and landscaping - LEITH - Master planning and landscaping scheme for a floating business village with waterside landscaping, Water of Leith, Edinburgh. Key aims were to: bring specially designed barges to the Water of Leith for leasing to local businesses; revitalise the lower, middle and upper basins walkway areas including a key access area, Coalie Park; propose a long term use for the old Leith Custom House as a whisky interpretation centre. New residential community - MIDLOTHIAN - A new settlement in Midlothian. Key aims were to: Urban Design Solutions were commissioned in a design advisory capacity to monitor and advise on the design quality of the developer's proposals, and to ensure adherence both in architectural and urban design terms to the approved master plan for the area. [Client: Midlothian Council - Status: Completed]
Harbour development - NORTH BERWICK - Regeneration of the historic harbour in North Berwick, East Lothian. Key aims were to: create a people's plan involving a public consultation process; better provide for a number of disparate activities within the harbour area; find a use for the disused swimming pool. [Commission: Urban Design Solutions Ltd employed as master planners and landscaping designers - Client: David Stamp Associates - Status: design proposal only]
NORTH BERWICK
New pocket square - EDINBURGH - Creation of a pocket square in a key location, Tollcross, Edinburgh. Key aims were to: enhance an iconic church building by creation of a new public space fronting the building; create a space to link the street and a major green space; put pedestrians before the car by safeguarding crossing routes at this major junction. NB: This scheme is part of a series of urban regeneration proposals contained in a Feasibility Study as a precursor to an attempt to achieve conservation area status. Urban Design Solutions Ltd were employed by Tollcross Community Council. [Client: Tollcross Community Council - Status: design proposal yet to be taken forward]
